I read this article in the Post this afternoon and really found it interesting. Of course, there's been a movie about Facebook, and much like the movie I'm not sure how accurate this article is since it's from a single point of view, but there are definitely some aspects of Facebook that I was pretty surprised to hear about. I often preach the importance of Internet safety to my students, and I think it's a valuable reminder for all of us. It's a bit scary when you think you're protecting yourself via privacy settings, and yet, according to Losse there are many behind the scenes moves that I would consider a violation of privacy (or, at the very least, an intense case of being misled). I was shocked when I realized, thanks to a banner on Facebook, that I've been a member for eight years. Eight!? In some ways it seems like such a long time. On the other hand though, it's crazy to think about how much our worlds have changed in so little time based on this one website.
Here's the article: Facebook Refugee
