Around this time every year, CP and I find ourselves in a cooking rut. Between the exhaustion of being back to our normal routine, the running/football/biking/tutoring that gets us home at 8pm most nights, and the recent addition of the puppy, we're just not in the mood to a) make a meal plan for the week on Sundays and b) execute said meal plan. Sadly, this results in being wasteful with some groceries and also eating way less nutritiously than we're used to. Enter Blue Apron!
I'd heard rumblings of Blue Apron and after yet another night of a frozen Trader Joe's dinner (don't get me wrong...I love me some TJs, but was becoming sick of staring at a dizzying list of ingredients on the frozen meals), I finally looked them up. Each week, they deliver a box that contains the recipes and all (I mean ALL) of the ingredients for three well-rounded meals that feed two people with room for leftovers. We chose the non-vegetarian box, and cooked up a steak salad, chicken thighs with polenta, and fish with fresh off the vine vegetables. What I LOVE about the Blue Apron concept is that everything is 100% doled out for you and labeled upon arrival, down to the spices, vinegar/oils, and any other necessities (such as parchment paper to cook the fish in). This saved SO.SO.SO. much prep time, which is what always kills us in the kitchen.
The recipes provided are extremely thorough and have photos as well, so you can tell if you're way off track. I was especially impressed with the quality of the produce and meat as well. Nothing that we received was under or over ripe, and everything had great flavor. I was a little concerned about the fact that the box can be delivered as early as 8am, which meant it would be sitting on our front stoop in the sun for many hours, but I came home to very chilled food and the insulation and ice packs were plentiful.
The price for the Blue Apron box is $60 a week, which breaks down to $20 per dinner for TWO people. Considering how much we're able to run up when we eat out at places that aren't nearly as delicious or healthy, this is a steal in my book.
