Last night, I surprised CP with a birthday dinner at Bandolero in Georgetown. Mike Isabella, who also opened Graffiato over in Chinatown last year, brought Bandolero to the dining scene in May. Ironically, the Posts dining guru Tom Sietsema happened to review the spot in this week's WPost magazine, and the review was pretty spot on. Delicious food, loud atmosphere. However, the one mention that he missed was the crazy corn - hands down the best bite(s) of food I've had in a long, long time.
The crazy corn is mini corn on the cobs that have been grilled and then rolled in cheese and crushed corn nuts. CP and I were both expecting the corn to be off the cob, but were pleasantly surprised with what arrived at the table. It was the perfect flavor combination and the texture was out of this world. Our waiter told us that he had eaten so much of it when he started working there that he had to take a break from it, hahaha. We also munched on their guac, suckling pig tacos, goat cheese and duck confit queso, and the sopes topped with spicy ground lamb (it's a small plates type of place).
The vibe of the restaurant was dark and loud, which is exactly what Sietsema harps on in his review. I actually mentioned to CP at one point during our meal that we hadn't eaten at such a loud restaurant in a long time. Luckily, we were pretty busy stuffing our faces! While the service and desserts were "eh", the rest of the meal was yummy enough to have us itching to head back.
If you're looking for a fun new spot in the city, Bandolero is a must! Don't forget to go a little crazy over the crazy corn.
